review 1: There were two parallel stories in this book - one taking place in present day and one taking place about 50 years earlier. Sometimes the parallel stories were too similar and I found myself thinking, didn't we already know that? The stories ended up being very intertwined, which I didn't know until it was revealed. I also liked the way one character's faith was woven into the story without being all out preachy.
review 2: I have a problem with sentimental, emotionally manipulative books like this. The two female protagonists are the consummate victim/survivors. ... morendering why she feels so unhappy. I wanted to mentally smack these women several times. Their maudlin whining was grating. Jio can write, but her florid, disease-of-the-week style makes me want to play Resident Evil for three days, just to regain equilibrium. My advice to her characters: get a grip, move on, stand up for what you want, and stop feeling guilty, social graces be damned.NB: This is a petty complaint, but I have a problem with the author giving herself five stars and explaining why she wrote the book. Don't really care. I was interested in the story, not her story. less
