review 1: Well written horror novel, good elements, pretty good characterization. My main complaint was the pacing - the story would be moving forward, more creepy things happening...and then the exact same thing would happen in the next scene. And the next. The thing with horror novels, or sci fi for that matter, is that once you've made the reveal, you have to continue to up the stakes, otherwise the plot runs in place. I nearly gave up midway through, but ended up finishing it and I'm glad I did - a satisfying ending, and a plot that came full circle. Would certainly read this author again.
review 2: Books like this make me wonder why horror is considered a dead genre. It did everything that horror is supposed to do. It was creepy and intense and thoroughly scary. I
... more cared about the characters and found them entirely believable. This book is beautifully written, in my opinion, and makes its horror one that is eminently relatable: the impermanence and unreliability of memory, the affect of the place one lives on one's interior life, and the nature of haunting. There are multiple forms of haunting in this book: the past, regrets, actual ghosts, and the future and it is the multiple layers that make this book so much fun to read and so creepy. less
