review 1: This book really touched a painful part in me. Jude's life with her ailing father is a nightmare, and although i don't know anyone with alzheimer's I can relate to the whole disease-in-the-family thing. It is painful and heart wrenching, and Sarah Ockler got it spot on. From researching the disease in secret to the if-i-do-this-one-thing everything will be all better hope as well as the constant joking between family members about the disease in an attempt to relieve each other's worry. I loved it, and my eyes were frighteningly watery more often than once. On the flip side, "the book of broken hearts" isn't just a sad novel about disease, it also funny and family focused. I loved all the little scenes between Jude and Emilio, as well as all the family interactions. Often ... moretimes when i read books like these i get caught up in the whole romance aspect and just let the extras be extras, and while the romance was good -not like A plus quality mind you- the other parts of the book totally eclipsed the romance, at least in my point of view. Sarah Ockler writes beautifully -loved hearing Pancake's thoughts!- and Jude was a brilliant MC. i will definitely not forget this book anytime soon, and i recommend it to everyone as a heartbreaker -just like the Vargas boys!- full of laughs and tears. Enjoy!
review 2: At first I didn't think this book would touch my heart as much as I thought it would, since it started out as a typical teen novel, even though we knew from the beginning that Jude's dad had Alzheimer's disease. In the middle of the story something changed though and I adored the relationship Jude had with her father and also with Emilio (obviously). I wasn't the biggest fan of Mari, but even she became more sympathetic in the end. I shed some tears and my heart goes out to everyone who has a family member or friend with Alzheimer's disease to take care of. less

If I had known how heartbreaking this book was, I might not have read it. But it is really good.
