review 1: I picked this book up because I love auto-biographical graphical novels. I find them to be personal, intriguing and honest. This book, however, didn't live up to my high expectations. I liked the artwork -- clear, creative, almost cute at times, but the story itself left much to be desired. I didn't really like Ivy, the main character, and her coming of age story wasn't compelling enough for me. I enjoyed the themes of adolescence, inter-personal drama and finding your self as an artist, but characters themselves weren't interesting enough.
review 2: Ivy is a teenage girl with anger issues and an unfortunate habit of alienating her friends, but longs to be accepted and loved. So when she starts corresponding with Josh, who she meets at an arts college open day
... moreshe finally thinks she's found someone who understands her.Ivy isn't always a very likeable character, but we still sympathise with her as she embodies the confusion, anger, passion and selfishness often associated with teenagers. Her life isn't a bed of roses growing up in a small town with a single mum who doesn't support her artistic ambitions and feeling hemmed in by the way she is treated in high school.A lot of why we still feel for Ivy is down to the way her emotions and expressions are conveyed through Oleksyk's artwork. In fact the art overall has a great sense of place and emotion, with even minor characters having distinctive personalities. less

Teen angst brought to life. Well drawn and well developed. So glad those years are long behind me!
