review 1: This is the first book I've read by British author Sarah Rayne and I really enjoyed it. The first book in the Nell West/Michael Flint series, it is equal parts cozy mystery, gothic, and ghost story, with a little romance thrown in for good measure. Let me start out my review by saying that this is a really scary book! Two young girls, one in England and the other in America, are having the same nightmare about a man with no eyes coming for them. Oxford professor Michael Flint and antiques dealer Nell West work together to solve a mystery centered on a derelict old estate called Charect House. Books like this one are as close to inheriting a grand old English home as I will ever get, and I enjoyed it immensely. I was drawn in by Rayne's voice, which is very British, rather ... morerestrained, and quite charming. I'm looking forward to reading the next book to see what Michael and Nell are up to next!
review 2: Do you want your standard ghost story set in a dilapidated English manor? This one has it all: graveyards, necromancy, people walled up alive, a grandfather clock crammed with documents, and of course rapping and tapping. The ghosts are hunted by Oxford professor Michael Flint and newly widowed antiques dealer Nell West, who are both assisting the hapless Americans who have inherited this very special house. Romance is in the air almost immediately, but it's not laid on too thick for us non-romantics. I want to make fun of this book, but actually it really hit the spot. The narrative is reminiscent of Wilkie Collins - thanks to those documents in the clock and other letters and diaries helpfully left behind by the dead. It's cleverly plotted, occasionally quite creepy, and it's set in Shropshire. What more could you want? less
