review 1: A lovely story that left me feeling good about people in general, and courageous poor girls in particular. There's a lot to like in this book. Casey makes for a fun and lovable main character (plus, there's a whole cast of colorful secondaries), and her dreams of being a great dancer never falter, in spite all the obstacles in her way. I love the setting, too: all the way from small town USA to a New York City boarding school, with a vintage feel to both. Lastly, the themes are the sort that give me goosebumps: dream big, be strong, be yourself, and never give up. I'd recommend this book to upper middle-grade/lower YA readers. The pace is somewhat languid, but it never swerves toward boring. There are many kids who don't know about the dance world, but the themes of this no... morevel will speak to any kid who's ever felt the whole world working against his/her dreams. Sarah Rubin is definitely an author I'll be looking for again.
review 2: Someday Dancer was the type of book I've been wanting to write because I hadn't found and read it yet. (Sure mine probably wouldn't have been about dancing, but it was the general feel of the book I was searching for.) Needless to say I was very well pleased with this book. The main protagonist was very likeable from the start because she was easy to sympathize with. The supporting characters were well written as well and filled the other perspectives and attitudes needed to complete the feel a well rounded set of characters should have. Someday Dancer is a story true to its title. Holding hope, promise, intrigue, possibility, and most of all dreams. Casey has a resolve I greatly admired. Most of all though I loved that she wasn't perfect. None of the characters were. They were human. But not irritatingly so. They were human in such a relatable way that I felt comfortable, and yet they held things I didn't have or know about yet so that I loved them. In other words, while they were human, they weren't over the top flawed. The writing was interesting. There were times when I doubted it and wondered at the way the story was told, but I was quickly embraced by it once again enough to safely snuggle me within the pages. The pacing was very satisfactory as well. For the most part the author did a good job slowing up and speeding down. She had a distinct style of writing that she pulled off pretty naturally. This book didn't look very long, and I did read it in a day, but it didn't feel rushed. I was actually kind of surprised by how much time it was able to cover while still keeping the story engaging, but keeping it within a close enough time frame to keep it one story. Overall, I was very pleased with this book. Much more so than I expected to be. So there it is; my patched up words trying to convey my thoughts and feelings on a very well told story and engaging read. less
