Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro

review 1: Very cute and light-hearted slice-of-life type story about a strange, androgynous girl named Kuro who travels from place to place, seemingly aimlessly, carrying a coffin with her. With her traveling companions, a pair of tiny cat-girls and a talking bat, she meets many different people and has all sorts of misadventures in her quest that at the end of the book remains quite ambiguous. However, one can glean that Kuro is searching for a witch that she has a grudge against, and that perhaps the witch has cursed her, because she is 'tainted black'. We can also surmise by the end of the book, by the bloody bandages, that Kuro is dying from the curse. It may be that the story is still getting warmed up, but I think perhaps the whole journey that Kuro is walking is meant to ... morebe an allegory for life; though it may be that I'm over-thinking it, and that this is just a cute manga that one doesn't have to think too hard about. I guess the only way to find out is to keep reading!
review 2: i think i like this more several months after reading it than i did at the time. it reads like a kids' comic (tho it's probably seinen, as a lot of these things are), which may have put me off at the time, but it has that authentic japanese cute strangeness - a sort of why the hell not approach. and it's a *beautiful* presentation by Yen Press. so nice to have colour panels rather than murky black and white. less
