review 1: I read all thee books in the Immortal City series in one sitting - I was bed bound for a couple of days with nothing to do just read...I liked them. I liked the cinematic description of everything - after reading them I found out the author is a movie director or something and you can see that through the books. I liked the new take on Angels (Protect for Pay and all that), I liked the heroics. And even though the books are a bit...I don't know, naive? childish? I liked them, it was a breath of fresh air in a gloomy - gloomy atmosphere...
review 2: Had to add a DNF shelf for this book...I need to stop picking up books where the love story is actually the plot. Here I thought I was getting a murder mystery (with angels!), and maybe a healthy dose of social comm
... moreentary - because I mean, come on: angels turning a profit on guardian services? It's a Jamesonian nightmare (or wet dream perhaps) and highly fertile ground for commentary. But no. High school love story. Sigh.I probably would have kept reading anyway if I'd liked the characters more. But while Maddy might have eventually grown on me, I found exactly zero things about Jackson interesting. He had no conflict to his character (unless you want to count how disenchanted he felt with being a wealthy celebrity). This book was simply not my cup of tea, but I think fans of Twilight might enjoy it. The main plot seems to be essentially the same (with the addition of a bit of murder in the background) and the writing is about on par. less
