review 1: [library audiobook, plot summary elsewhere]Based on enjoyment, especially the voices of the reader, and especially the voice of Terry, the foulmouthed octogenarian aunt, I would have given it a 4. The emphasis on Greek immigrant culture, the throes of lesbian love and the difficulties of growing old were also positive. I liked the extensive discussion of DNA typing. I'll certainly read another Turow if it comes up on the library list. But, the story of the twins was too unbelievable. The out-of-love breakup story of the lesbian security executive was irrelevant, then unresolved, and took up time. Why is the female FBI agent so frequently an Olympic athlete in a minor sport (field hockey)? The coda at the end didn't add much.So to be fair, it only gets... more a 3.
review 2: I couldn't help comparing this book to the other mystery I just finished -- "Oath of Office" by Michael Palmer -- and I have to say that "Identical" comes out ahead. The plot is more complex, and the resolution that I was proud of having deduced well before the end --- turned out to be incorrect. The characters are more fully developed. I felt a strong attachment to Tim, the 81-year-old private investigator, and to Evon, the 51-year-old lesbian who becomes his close collaborator. Still, the book had its slow sections and didn't really grab me. less

Not one of his best, interesting plot twists but in the end not a real interesting ending.

I guess I just hoped that Turow could avoid identical twin cliches.
