After the Snow
review 1: After the Snow by S.D. Crockett was a very well written and thought out book. However, it's reading pace from beginning to end did nothing but slow down. After reading through the whole book, I can not really tell if I liked it or not. The idea of the book was one of the best parts about it. S.D. Crockett must have really thought about this idea as a reader could pull out many different views on it and they still would not be far apart. I really liked the unique idea as it gave the book an edge that kept me reading through it's slow moving pace. It can only make me keep thinking about what it would be like to live in Willo's world. S. D. Crockett's idea to have a government run land that was hardly hit by snow and weather, set the base for almost anyt... morehing to happen. She even had the extremes right next to each other only to be separated by one road. I really liked S.D. Crockett's idea as it tied the whole book together and kept me reading from start to finish. Not only did the book have a good idea, but it was set and given a very earthy and realistic reading to it. This dystopian novel, unlike others, was almost a completely real world scenario. I really liked this factor as it gave me many chances to connect with the texts. There was a point when Willo was walking under some Pinetrees trying to avoid touching the branches because of all the snow build up on top of the branches. If all of it fell down on him, he would be certainly dead. As soon as I read this, thoughts of when I was little and playing in the snow popped into my head. It was because of the earthy theme that I remembered pulling on the low limbs just to get drenched in snow. The realist, earthy theme allowed me to create many connections with the book compared to a normal out of this world dystopian novel. The idea was able to make the first couple chapters auctioned packed and exciting. These couple chapters raised my hopes up higher than they should have been for the book. Once the book calmed down and all the action settled... It stayed that way! It never picked up again! Once Willo got into the city, the reading pace for me almost slowed down to a stop! This failed my expectations of the book and caused me to slightly dislike it. I can not really decide if I liked the book or not but I can certainly say that it failed to fulfill my expectations. Yes, the idea and realistic earthy feeling was great but the slow pace of the story line overpowered everything. After the Snow may be liked by some, but it failed to keep pace and keep my expectations. As I have stated already, I can not decide if I liked the book or not.
review 2: Disclaimer: I read an advanced readers copy. Some details of the version I read may differ from the final version.I wasn't expecting much from this book. I only picked it up because my younger-self brought it home 3 years ago and I felt like I owed it to her to read it. I was expecting an over-dramatic, formulaic, YA dystopian novel (the sort which exists in droves on any library's teen shelf). I was pleasantly surprised. In fact, I would have given this book 5 stars, if not for the ending.I liked the writing style, it was different and thus interesting and made for a very consuming read. Seriously, I was reading this on the train at night and I forgot that when we came back above ground it would be spring and not desolate winter. I found myself hurrying home along the dark streets because the foreboding sense that there were wolves stalking me wouldn't go away. If you're looking for a quick read to suck you in you couldn't find a better book.I even found the book thought provoking, bringing up questions about religion, hope, human nature, and what spurs our urge to survive. Beyond prompting my thoughts the book added a new perspective to these topics, making me see them differently in a good, sometimes uncomfortable way. And best of all it does so without once feeling preachy or forceful. Instead of hitting me over the head with her thoughts the author presents them and leaves it up to me to dig further. While this may not always be good in writing, given the format and topic of this book I think it's important. My only complaint is with the ending. It was anti-climactic and abrupt. Although now I've thought about it, I appreciate that it offers a message about survival that makes this book more optimistic than most of its genre. However, it still left me frustrated and confused. I like the idea behind it I just wonder if it could have been better done.Ending aside, this book has it all. Really all the best qualities of its genre (deep thoughts, action, and oh the plot twists) without the bad ones. So read it, it won't be a waste of time. less
