review 1: 4 years back, I picked up a book that was the most fun I have ever had in a book from a debut author and that was Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch and finally, I find a book that is a logical heir to the best book by a debut author that combines all the fun, the darkness, and the camaraderie of a team. A book that seems like a light hearted romp but gets progressively darker. That book is Traitor's Blade. Sizzling pace, great wit and fascinating sword play cannot conceal the pain and darkness that the lead characters bear with them. A book that keeps you utterly and entirely captivated for the first 75% of the book before a fair share of Deux ex Machinas interfere towards the end. Nonetheless, one cannot but wait for book 2.
review 2: A very good, swashbuckl
... moreing fantasy somewhere in between "The Three Musketeers" and "The Name of the Wind." A young King almost dies at the crazed hand of a swordsman bent on vengeance due to the wanton cruelty of the King's father. Instead, he recruits the would-be assassin to help him found a new order of "Greatcoats" (roaming agents of the King's Law not unlike the French Musketeers.) His Kingdom is in decline; the Dukes have usurped most sovereignty and enslaved their respective peoples. Only the Kings can challenge the Dukes and their local authority, but they gave up administering the King's Law and running their Greatcoats for generations. That is, until the events unveiled in this novel. The Dukes united in their hatred of interference and killed the last King and scattered the Greatcoats to the four winds. A few survive and try to follow the last orders of their dead King and re-establish the rule of law and some decency to their country. It's not working and even the most stout of heart are beginning to fail in their quest. To be fair, the book is better written than this review, better plotted, and uses flashbacks and humor to greater affect. Give it a try; this could be a worthwhile series in the making. less
