review 1: *** I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***I really enjoyed this book, but I did have some issues and I think they all stem from Livvy. Or, to be more specific, the lack of depth of characterization for her. I found myself second guessing everything she did and there were a few moments where I really had a hard time believing she was so slow on the uptake with her observations. Had there been a little backstory about her and her character more fleshed out the story in general would have worked better I think. I loved the idea of emotions giving power, and as a person who is overly-empathetic to the point of fault, it was super cool to see that trait developed into a superpower. At the same time that causes my main problem with the story. Li... morevvy is a natural born empath and is also totally clueless that these ass hats who have welcomed her to their little club are, in fact, ass hats. I totally get that they were manipulating her, but I would have liked to see her pushing and digging a little deeper into what was going on. Specifically at the point they suggested plastic surgery. At that point I would have liked to see her question these people instead of just smiling and nodding. I spent the first three quarters of the book facepalming most of her actions, not to mention her inability to put two and two together, but her development over the last quarter of the novel bumped the rating from three stars to four. Her acknowledgement that her view of a hero as glamorous and loved by all was seriously skewed won me over in the long run. Good for Livvy to finally see that heroism is sacrifice, not gratitude and adoration.
review 2: Details, details, details, a whole lotta what this book was missing. There was no storyline setup or background on it. It was just basically as is.There was promise though and it could have been better but it wasn't horrible. I read it in two hours with minimum skimming. The romance between Livy and Dean was almost as obtuse as her and Jake. I think Livy should had more substance to her character. She was sort of boring and naive but I guess thats what the author was going for. The whole book seemed lack of something I cant put my finger on.It just seems so unbelievable and reminds me about the stupid movie those teenage boys get some powers from an alien rock or something and do stupid things with them. Until someone takes it to another level. less
