review 1: A strong start to what looks like an interesting series! The pluses for me were having a heroine of color, the Egyptian themes - including the gods & goddess, a very unique magic system and subtle romance. The one bobble was Kira's moment of "temporary insanity", like those thrown into just about every other novel with a strong female lead, where the woman in question does exactly the opposite of what should be done, due to panic, fear, and/or misunderstanding, despite her usual nature of being strong, independent, intelligent and resourceful. Thankfully, Kira recovers from the female lead affliction relatively quickly.I plan to continue this series, mostly likely after the 4th book has been released.
review 2: Very close to unputdownable. I've always had a lov
... moree of things Egyptian, though I couldn't say where I came by it. I'd heard a good many things about this series, its Badass WOC heroine, and how Egyptian myth flowed through the story with history attached. I was not disappointed. Kira was an orphan from as far back as she could remember, gifted and cursed with psychometry, the ability to read the past of anyone or anything she touched. I've seen it before as a mild inconvenience to the psychic, but for Kira, it was a life ruiner. Until she was 11, she couldn't eat anything she hadn't grown or picked herself. When she hit puberty at 12 the power ramped up so severely she had to recluse herself and very nearly starved for lack of anything to eat that wouldn't set off her ability. Flash forward a decade or so. Kira survived the pain and suffering of her power, and is now not only a magical antiques expert, but a warrior in the battle for Balance, to keep the world from being corrupted by Shadow. Her oldest friend brings her a shiny "new" antique that sets the plot in motion. The book began a little formulaic and predictable. The moment her friend was late to their dinner, I called his fate. Shortly thereafter, Kira walks into the gothy dance club with a nonhuman owner that seems a fixture in UF. And the sidekick, the old guy who looks like Morgan Freeman? Once you hear his name, it's pretty much a giveaway. But those are the only criticisms I can make. The story paces nicely. The narrative covers multiple characters smoothly and the supporting cast is so lovable as a surrogate family that I hope they stick around for the future books. I got a gift card from Secret Santa. I know what I'm spending it on. less
