review 1: "Were you able to become the person you wanted to be?""Even if he brushes away my hand, I'll still hold it out to him.""No matter what life, no matter what person, everyone has to say goodbye sometime. When that time comes... I hope I can say what I have to. I hope I can express the feelings and the words that matter most."I cannot begin to express how much I love this series, the wonderful, young, naive longing for something undefined that it leaves inside of me every time I reread it. What a beautifully innocent thought to think someday we'll be reunited with the soul we've set our lives out for. What terrible hopelessness to feel we won't. Also, I love the way the mangaka portrays the struggles of her characters to find peace with the darkest corners of their souls, to... more continuously model their souls into something better, purer, higher. The fluidity of the main character's gender throughout the series was also very much to my liking. Her wandering through the gender spectrum, although a burden to her who was in need of a decision, felt somewhat light and natural.Although I always finish these volumes with a subtle heartache, they make me feel youthfully human and that's why I come back for more. Simply incredible.
review 2: **THIS IS A REVIEW FOR THE ENTIRE SERIES AND NOT JUST THIS VOLUME**I wanted to read this manga for a very long time since I was eleven. I read the first few volumes at the hairdresser's and it got me hooked and extra curious. Finally, I found the chance to read it. I had emotional trauma over the whole series and refused to read other novels after that because of the angst inside everyone's heart. After School Nightmare starts by introducing Ichijo Mashiro, our main protagonist, who is male on the top half of his body and female on the bottom half. He attends a secret after school class, where he dives into a dream and battles with other students. The thing is, the students are not portray as what they look in real life, but in the shape of their soul. That leads to very surreal characters - a red riding hood stained in blood, an armoured knight without any man inside, a braided schoolgirl with holes covering her facial features and her chest, an arm alone that can spread as long as it wants, an elementary school kid who wears black and holds a teddy in one hand, and of course, our protagonist, who appears to be more ordinary than the others. They wear a necklace of three beads that triggers by fear (Either broken by being physically or mentally hurt by words). Once three beads explodes, they wake up and continue their real life till the next lesson. To 'graduate', or to win, they have to retrieve a special key from a certain character (varies every session). But one of the perks of graduating is that: after they passed the gate and graduate, everyone would forget everything about the person altogether. Usually when I read books, I can guess a bit of what's going to happen, like the easiest resolution: this is a happy ending. But while reading After School Nightmare, I had no idea what will happen. Isn't the whole idea a bit odd they forgot everything about the person after the graduation? Like they had plan a murder for them and kept it a secret. My questions always come back to what's behind the gate. It's heartbreaking to know that the characters who had confronted their weakness forgot of those people who had helped them. None of the gate gets explained until the very end. And when it did, mindblown. I was left with my own thoughts and I want to scream to everyone how good this book is. Moffat can't put a less confusing and meaningful ending like this author. This plot twist is priceless. Two plot twist in fact. The one about a certain character and the other for the academy. The characters are dark and relatable. Most of them so angst. Their weapons in their dreams are basically their imagination. It is not a battle of strength, but soul. Yet scenes can be bloody. Death can be gruesome. But they always wake up and return to reality. I cannot with this book, discovering who each dream characters was was truly a great adventure. Plus, darn sexy it is. Because Ichijo has two genders, he can date both genders and calls himself straight. Ichijo insisted that he was a boy so he rejected Sou (guy)'s love, and dated Kureha (girl), the cute cheerful girl with a dark past. But Ichijo and Sou kissed and fucked over a few times, so he became part of the triangle. (It's yaoi [def: boy x boy sex], but it isn't. Yet it's drawn in a way of boy x boy sex)Honestly? I don't like Ichijo. He earned the title 'Prince of Hypocrisy', and I very much agree. Just remembering all the sappy things he said to Kureha... ugh. His indecisiveness gets on my nerve. Thank goodness his creator gave him a taste of his own medicine constantly. The indecisive one shouldn't always get what they want easily like a stereotyped Korean/Taiwanese drama. Thank you.I love this book down to pieces and I hope you will love it too. less
