review 1: Very good book. Campolo and Claiborne offer lots of thought provoking writing in a conversation style book. I admire their ambition in covering a whole lot of material and they didn't shy away from discussing some of the bigger topics that are currently circulating both in the church and in society as a whole (Islam, homosexuality, hell, etc.). As I read this book there were so many lines that I had to highlight because they really resounded with me and put words to sentiments that should be considered in the public arena. This was my first time reading Campolo, but I've read four other Claiborne books. Every time I read a Claiborne book I hope that it'll be as good as Irresistible Revolution which really impacted me when I was younger. None of his subsequent books have be... moreen on that same level, but this book is probably the next best. The book as a whole is very comprehensive and cohesive in the material. My only major knock on the book is that I do feel it got away from the actual premise. The idea is that people form their worldview as Christians around the "red letters" of the Bible (that being the words that Jesus Himself spoke). I love the idea, but merely giving one quotation at the beginning of the chapter and then spending the next ten pages talking about your beliefs isn't necessarily unpacking what Jesus' thoughts on the different matters were. That's not to say their opinions are wrong or unbiblical, but just that they aren't substantiated by Christ's words. Personally, I do agree with them on many of their viewpoints, but not all and certainly there were points where either one of them might have been reading into the scripture or simply giving their own opinion. The material is certainly thought provoking and it's the kind of book that you can pick up, read a chapter, spend time thinking about it and pick it back up whenever you want. I recommend it to any Christian that wants to be challenged in their worldview or to a non-Christian that wants to hear about the spiritual lives of a couple influential men that are passionate about Jesus' life.
review 2: What a spectacular book. The peacefulness with which Claiborne and Campolo dialogue on the issues in the book was so refreshing from the constant partisan bickering so common elsewhere in theological and evangelical circles. The disagree in places and yet can still have an enriching conversation without disintegrating into fighting or a parting of the ways. I did feel the first two parts of the book were much stronger than the last third, but in large part because I felt that they gave away the game on the issue of empire, and would have stated the issue much more starkly. Oh well. The whole "red letter" approach has been criticized by some as an abandonent of the Old Testament and the rest of the Bible, which they point out is all the words of Jesus. And of course they are correct in a technical sense that is unhelpful and obstructionist. The point is not that God wasn't involved in the writing of the OT; the point is that there was a covenantal shift with the coming of Jesus which cannot be ignored. We're not under Moses anymore, regardless of how you want to see that change brought about. Jesus's life and teachings become our new life and teachings of the New Moses. Paul used th OT, but he always started with Jesus and only then went back to read the OT in a new light. Our obligation is to start with Jesus and figure the rest out as we go. Which is what Claiborne and Campolo are trying to do. less
