review 1: I'm thankful for friends who ask me to read books I'd never pull off the shelf. This one's a doozie. You think we live in a post-racist or a post-sexist world? Your hidden brain probably doesn't agree with your conscious mind. Mr. Vedantam writes with a conversational style, based heavily on sociological and psychological research, while telling the stories of this research as if the book were a novel. Well done!! Don't miss this!!
review 2: Another disturbing yet important read. I would recommend this book to everyone as a vehicle for understanding more about one's own behavior as well as the behavior of others. ... moremited control over our own minds. Despite the fact that Vedantam does not offer much in the way of overcoming our subconscious, I'm hoping I will give pause when I need to make major decisions. I would have liked to know how the reversal on the gun control issue in Washington DC affected the suicide rate. less
