review 1: Just like the first book, The Princess Academy, the premise did not appeal to me and the first few pages did not grab me, but then, I found the story hooked inside my brain. I'd put the book down and wonder what was missing and realize it was the story I was missing. This second book grew on me as I read and I'm glad I read it. There were some wonderful words of wisdom that struck a chord with me and made me think that I might enjoy reading this book again. It seems like this book would be a wonderful one for a discussion on leadership.
review 2: I really enjoyed the first book (Princess Academy #1), even though I remember raising an eyebrow at the exact way the Miri's body diverged from her societal norms - dainty and petite, and coincidentally aligned pre
... moretty neatly with our's! But I liked the character, liked the setting, and was excited for this book. But guys I think I hate Miri now. She never does or says the wrong thing! She's intelligent, compassionate, thoughtful, beautiful, the hero of the people, and EXACTLY impudent enough to merit approval from other characters, usually male, while never actually abrasive enough to make someone anything other than charmed. You'd think a story about a girl who sets out to change society and rejects the role other people want to cast her in would float my boat, but it just didn't. Also, for a story about revolution, there sure was a veil drawn over the gender inequality (one slightly-less-silent queen does not the first wave of feminism make). While generally I liked the fact that a middle grade novel broached the fact that there's more than one boy in the world, the eventual conclusion to that love triangle just reinforced the standard order of ops. Miri is so disingenuous and wide-eyed and un-self-aware that if it weren't for the fact she's also a stirring, widely read writer whose every move steers the world towards a brighter tomorrow, I would seriously consider having her talk to a professional. less

It was okay. I read it all but not with the urgency I had to finish the first novel.
