ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
I grew up in Berkeley, California, which is a quirky sort of a place with many wonderful bookstores. When I was fifteen, my very first job was working in one of those bookstores. It’s where I would go after school, and I’d read everything that I could. Back then, some of the books that had the greatest impact on my life were young adult novels, and now, as an adult, I’ve found my own passion in writing for teens.
Other passions of mine include mental health advocacy, social justice, and sports of all kinds. When I’m not writing or reading (or studying for graduate school), I’m usually out-side running or playing with my family. I currently live in Northern California with my husband, three kids, and our menagerie of pets. Life is loud, joyous, and filled with animal hair.
Oh, and in case you’re wondering, my last name is pronounced keen. I know! I don’t get it either.

Well it’s August 7th and I am officially rewriting the review for this. I was really excited to read this book. The story sounded amazing and was something I could really see myself getting into. Well did I end up getting into it, let’s find out!
I am sad to say this book ended up being pretty disappointing to me. I didn’t get into it at all. I really thought I could originally finish it before the Blog Tour and I had no such luck. I didn’t have the motivation to read this. It had sounded like something I would really enjoy but I felt the pacing was so slow. I didn’t get into the book until 50% the way through. That’s where I felt things finally started moving. Sadly though I still found myself skimming through the book and not really paying attention to what was happening. I found myself stopping a couple times to reread certain passages just so I could get an idea what happened for the review. I feel maybe I didn’t get into the exciting parts because I just couldn’t get into the story from the start. I love these types of books. I love when you find out something bad happened but you don’t know what happens until later on. I guess maybe it was just too slow of a start for me.
I also wasn’t a huge fan of the main character. I know someone commented on this before I actually wrote this full review saying how he was a lost soul. I guess I could see that. He has had a lot of bad happen to him in his life. I do feel his pain. Overall though I don’t think I really cared for him or his relationship with Rose. I’m not sure if I was the only one who was bothered by the beginning of the story where Rose comes up to him and declares they are boyfriend and girlfriend randomly. I was really bothered by that scene for some reason. It didn’t help that I also really didn’t like Rose’s character. I didn’t care for the relationship they had. I honestly could have cared less what happened between the two of them. I guess I didn’t feel much chemistry between the two of them if that makes sense.
Overall I did enjoy where the author was trying to go with the story. You find out right away the main character is in jail for something he did to his girlfriend. You’re not sure what but by the time the book ends you will know what ended up happening on that school camping trip they went on. It will be on the main character’s time. So all in all I did like where the author was going with this a lot.
Sadly I did not enjoy this book as I would have hoped. I feel horrible writing a bad review about it especially for a blog tour. I really did try to get into this book but it just wasn’t for me. I saw a lot of other great reviews. If it sounds interesting to you I say go for it and see what you think of it.
