review 1: Rory McCain is a police sketch artist by day and a pro bono private investigator by night. When her Uncle Mac suddenly dies, Rory inherits his house, his private investigation business and his ghost Zeke. While closing out Mac's cases, she becomes involved with the brother of a murder victim. Rory decides to investigate Gail Oberlin's sudden death. It is a very dry story, as Rory digs deeper in to the murder and becomes a target. Although, the killer is in her face, Rory is unable to see it until she is almost killed herself. Nice idea for a murder mystery but too dry to actually keep the readers interest.
review 2: Pretty standard cozy, with a police sketch artist paired with a ghost (a marshal who's been dead for a hundred years). As with many books I've read... more, I'll accept the ghost but some of the little things had me nitpicking. A little editing could make this a nice, fluffy rainy-day mystery that doesn't set off my nitpicky meter:The Starbucks beverage is a frappuccino, not "frappachino." It pops up like this several times and just drove me crazy.No, I wouldn't have picked on this so much if Starbucks hadn't made such frequent appearances.A couple of spelling & punctuation errors here & there - are they not paying people to proofread anymore?Oh - and a gun doesn't have a "hilt." It has a "grip." Swords, knives, and daggers have hilts. A detective reaching for the "hilt" of his/her gun just sounded silly.The baddie gets introduced with a trumpet fanfare and a big "I Did It" flashing arrow sign.Still, we have a lot of rain in our future - I'm sure there'll be more time for the other books in the series. less
