review 1: ‘Rich Boy’ is a coming of age story of a middle class Jewish boy, Robert Vishniak, who grows up in a Philadelphia neighborhood and successfully graduates from college and eventually law school. It is a story of family relationships, friendships, lovers and marriage and the complexities that weave them all together. Although Robert has such high aspirations to find true happiness in achieving the status of partner in his father-in-law’s law firm, the story reveals that he has to come full circle to realize what really makes him happy. Some may argue that this story reads like a soap opera; however, my recommendation is that it is a good book to pack and bring along on your summer or winter vacation. For me, the most touching of all relationships was between Rober... moret and his college roommate from Tufts University, Tracey. The loyalty and bonding that develops between the two characters, amidst all the drama and turmoil, is heartwarming and uplifting.
review 2: One would think that a novel "ten years in the making" would be stellar. This one barely got off the ground. Very serious, almost depressing, absolutely no humorous moments, often plodding, yet there were several themes that I wanted to see brought to conclusion. In summary, a boy from lower middle class parents manages to go to college, then marry into a moneyed family. This and that happens along the way. A few surprises but mostly predictable. Oh, and the Michigan connection? The author got a post-grad degree from U of M and is on the faculty there now. less
