review 1: I thought that Keeping Safe The Stars wasn't very challenging but I wasn't surprised because it wasn't even close to my lexile score I just really wanted to read it. This book was realistic fiction and is about a 13 year old girl named Pride. Pride is left to take care of her orphaned siblings when her grandfather goes ill. The "stars" must find a way to stay together and survive on their own without getting caught and sent to the orphanage.
review 2: I liked this book a lot more than I expected to. "Kids trying to make it on their own" is a common theme in YA/middle grade books, and it's not one of my favorite conceits. Still, there was a lot to like here, including the distinct personalities of Pride, Nightingale, and Baby (the kids in question), as well as t
... moreheir eccentric older neighbor who was fragile enough that I found myself worrying about *her* as much as about the kids. I liked the Northern Minnesota setting, too, and could picture it well. What intrigued me most was Pride's memory of her life on a commune prior to their mother's death; because she was a child while she lived on the commune, her perception of it isn't wholly complete or reliable, and it's left up in the air whether there was anything fishy going on there, or whether it was more of a "cult" than a community. The ending had its share of heartbreak, but it was just hopeful enough to bring tears of relief to my eyes. less
