review 1: This is historical fiction about the WASP unit (Women Airforce Service Pilots) set up during WWII. The story centers on Ida Mae Jones, a young black woman whose father taught her to fly. She loved flying and dreamed of doing it over and over again. When she heard that WASP was looking for pilots, she pretended to be white so she could make it into the group. The fact that there never actually were any black women in the WASP did not bother me, as I got a clear sense of what the times were like through this little bit of fictional fudging. Each chapter pulled you to the next, and it was a shame that the story had to end. A great read.
review 2: Very accessible historical fiction for teens. Lots of questions remain unanswered at the end of the book, but that unkn
... moreown is kind of satisfying. Ida Mae's problems don't all get resolved; a man doesn't come and save the day. It's enough that she has had the chance to fly and serve her country. I would recommend for teens looking for coming-of-age stories, historical fiction, or a strong female character. Great book clubchoice, in my opinion. less
