review 1: I bought my own copy of this book rather than wait for the one copy to be shared among 4 teachers at my grade level. "Number Talks" are happening in my second grade classroom three times per week and are intended to strengthen mental math skills. My students are enjoying the talks and most participate. I am looking forward to getting into this book for help in how to ask intentional questions to get my students to the next level of thinking that I have in mind for them in a certain set of skills. I am sure I will learn a lot about number sense even after 25 years of teaching. I am NOT saying I am sold on Common Core one way or the other. This is something I have to teach. Therefore, I aim to teach it well. I think this will be a good resource for me. More to come... more…..
review 2: This book is truly a great resource for any teacher wanting to increase his or her students' "math talk" and critical thinking skills. By providing sample problems for students to solve in multiple ways, student conversation and math vocabulary are encouraged and normalized. In addition, through student-led discussion about the various ways to problem solve, classmates learn from each other and see that there is more than one way to find a solution. less
