review 1: I just can't do it. I just can't read another SS novel about a heroine who has butt-length hair. And it's always honey colored. And this heroine, just like the one in Coronets and Steal, does this weird point and shoot thing with her finger as though it's cool and uses slang in a slightly off-kilter awkward way and wears nerdy tee shirts about books, all the while copping a bad-ass attitude. I have the sense that the exact same character is being recycled. Actually recycled is perhaps a strong word for it -- plopped down in a new story with a different name, is perhaps more accurate. By the end of Coronets and Steal this character's mannerisms started to grate on my nerves like nails on a blackboard. Perhaps this is unfair. I do see that the reviews of this book are better... more. But I'm already set on edge, unfairly prejudiced against the lovely lady; 20 pages in and am hoping she gets here ass kicked in some painful way... I just can't take her again. Argh.
review 2: Sasharia lives & works in LA. One day two men show up trying to kidnap her, but as she and her mother have lived on the run since Sasharia was ten. She'd been trained to expect someone to come for her someday, and that allowed her to evaded them. She immediately calls her mother to warn her. In response her mom claims they both needed to change their names and move again, instantly. Sasharia disagrees, claiming she'd made a life, of sorts, for herself in LA and she would stay there over going to try and get lost in the shuffle of NYC.Sasharia does get caught though, as she never expected anyone from the world Sartorias-deles, let alone anyone working for Canardan Merindar (the evil usurper of the throne of Khanerenth), to dress as a lawyer. Lawyers are of this world, not the world she was born on. He tricks her and before she can stop him they are hurtling through a portal back to the land of her birth. From there her adventures take off, as she is a priceless pawn in the game of thrones, being the daughter of the beloved Princess (her mother), who had marred the believed Prince Mathis when he traveled to Earth. As a Princess in her own right, and about the same age as the usurper's bumbling, witless son Jehran, the alliance between her family name and the current royal family could go a long way towards settling unrest and ensuring his son's legacy as the future King.Meanwhile her mother uses her one portal talisman to go back to Khanerenth in a bid to find and rescue her only child. Unfortunately she is captured by King "Canary" Merindar within a day of arrival, and is currently his "guest" at her old caste.Sash is kidnapped by the notorious pirate/privateer Zathdar. During her time with him she finds herself slowly becoming very attracted to him, the kind of attraction the leaves you aware of the other person's location and distance from you at all times. Nothing she planned to act upon. She is surprised that he keeps his word and puts her ashore after running a blockade, as she really didn't expect him to just let her go free. After a few short hours on land she makes a stunning discovery, just as she is being kidnapped yet again. While the storyline has potential, the sheer number of gross errors in this book actually made some parts difficult to figure out what the author wanted to say. Incorrect words were used often, and the lack of anything resembling spell-check (manual or computerized) was obscene. So I give the last third of the story 2.5 stars, the first two thirds 1.5, and the writing/grammar a whooping .5 stars, leaving the book as a whole with an aggregate score of .9 stars, which I have to round up to one star if I include effort. Maybe the print version isn't such a catastrophic disaster, but the e-book version I have is, and it ruined the book for me. I won't be coming back to find out what happens - or at least not on purpose. I literally had to struggle to make it through this abysmal 'writing' to the end. less
