review 1: As an adult, I give it 2.5 stars; kids aged 6-10 might well give it more. A collection of short supernaturally-themed stories, but some storytelling shortcomings such as the writer having to explain 'how the protagonist did that' after the fact in a couple of cases, and occasionally telling instead of showing (which would have been more effective). The art is kind of primitive/sketchy-style, more comic-strip-like than the more polished manga styles I'm used to--though a few setting images are very effective at setting a good old-fashioned creepy atmosphere--but it's still its own style and not just terrible art. Still fun as a casual read, though kids would get more out of it.
review 2: Just because it's a classic doesn't mean that it's good... I've enjoyed par... morets of the various and childish Kitarou anime series over the years, but this collection of several chapters from the original manga shows that the original doesn't have the best storytelling in the world. The art conveys little sense of action and often author Mizuki relies on off-screen narration to explain how Kitarou gets himself out of trouble. Shockingly, not a single one of the selected chapters includes the iconic Neko Musume!! less
