review 1: Yet another enjoyable tale in Sid Fleischman’s repertoire, this story imagines into being a character called the Dream Stealer, whose job is to steal nightmares from little children. Based on a statue he once saw in a Mexican handicraft shop, his character takes on endearing charm as he has become frightened of nightmares himself and now, rather sheepishly, only steals happy dreams. He meets his match in a young lady who catches him out and demands her good dream back so that she can see how it ends. Through these unusual circumstances, Fleischman quaintly encourages us to bravely face our fears, including loneliness and friendship interrupted. In the author’s note at the back of the book, Fleischman’s gift to fellow storytellers is that even he, prolific as he i... mores, sometimes runs out of story ideas; yet he always keeps “tripping over story bones, half buried,” even when he is not looking. He reminds us in his clever tales that the stories have not all been told, and we all have something to unearth and share.
review 2: Anna loved this book. It was okay. It's a transitional level chapter book - so written for about a second grade reader. I read it aloud to her. Feels very much like the BFG although not as original. Very simple plot. The dream stealer is not such a bad guy after all and learns a lot from the main character - Susana who solves his problem by outwitting a two headed ogre who has escaped from the dream stealer's dungeon. He becomes courageous because of her actions. Takes place in Mexico and includes an abuelita and red hot peppers. The author is not Latino...so I'm thinking this would not be considered "multicultural." less

A rather simple plot--reminded me of My Father's Dragon and the BFG at a 2/3 RL.
