DEBATE
review 1: I never write reviews, but definitely felt moved to write this one-Opened my mind more than any book I've read in quite a while.... Mukherjee does a remarkable job of explaining the medicine without losing a layperson like myself, but also makes the reader reside inside the minds and lives of the doctors and patients involved. I have a new respect for the specialized fields within oncology and the type of grit required to make true advancements in medicine. Love knowing that someone reading this book will definitely be inspired to join the battle on the front lines of cancer research.
review 2: THIS BOOK TOOK ME SO LONG TO FINISH. I started this book in 2011. It was one of the first books I downloaded onto my Kindle, the first day I had my Kindle. I wanted
... moreto be “that person” who reads the bestseller and learns all about science…..I had only gotten through about 20% of this book by last Saturday (February 15th), and finished it Monday morning (the 24th). That’s a really slow pace for me. 80% of a book in 12 days? Ugh. Very indicative of how slow it was: just a parade of scientist names, universities, and experiments. I feel like it lacked cohesion, but all of its parts taken as individuals was interesting.I really enjoy science writing. But this was too much. It needs more gore, less step-by-step of this trial begot this experiment begot this trial begot this paper published, and on and on and on… TOO MUCH!But I do feel more informed about what cancer is, how it works, how it spreads, etc. So I guess it did the job. UGH. I’m just so relieved to be DONE with this one…On to something fun, for sure. Really contemplating the Catherine the Great bio by Robert K. Massie. It’s a 100% guarantee that I will love it, but I’m not sure if I want to commit to a 650 pager right now. Then again, I am now officially unemployed, so why not? less
