review 1: A really well done presentation on the history of cancer - from the disease itself to its treatments, its diagnosis and the evolution of our understanding of both the biology and chemistry of the disease as well as the drugs to combat it. I particularly liked the way he put all of the above into perspective from the viewpoint of patients, treatment providers, researchers, and pharmaceutical companies.
review 2: A biography of cancer - what an interesting concept. The history, depth of innovation and intensity of determination is pretty amazing. Being non-sciency, it was such a treat to learn about this evolving journey, plus understand how this common topic is being addressed from so many vantage points, coming together in the name of progress. I have so much
... morerespect for the oncologists and related-specialties featured in the novel (past, present, and future).Although I consider this a must-read and Mukherjee did a nice job of making it interesting throughout, I did find it kind of hard to get through. Mainly because the subject matter is quite dense and it's not a topic I found myself "lost" in. Perhaps the mix of historic and real-life reflections could have been a bit more balanced. Regardless, a powerful and informative book. less
