review 1: I enjoyed this story of a 10-year-old Dutch boy growing up on an island in the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia)during WWII. He tells the story of when the Japanese take over and send his family to a work camp. This is also a story about his first crush, childhood rivalry, and the perseverance of a willful young boy. Well-paced. Often depressing but that was their reality. The story is inspired by the author's anecdotes of his grandfather and father's lives.
