review 1: In a post flu pandemic US, orphaned Cole ends up living in a fundamentalist Christian community with a preacher and his somewhat air-headed wife. This novel is a look into Cole’s mind as he makes sense of teenage angst, the death of his parents, his budding romantic feelings, and how to synthesize his atheist/Jewish background with the strong beliefs of his current surroundings. If there’s one thing Nunez did right, it was to make me feel like I was really engaging with a teen. I spent most of the book feeling vaguely annoyed with Cole.
review 2: I felt like this book was about a few too many different things and yet had not enough of a plot. It's about a flu epidemic and also about being orphaned and adopted. The main character is adjusting to a very Chr
... moreistian household after being raised by atheists (yet his adjustment is so quick it's barely a plot point), and he's also dealing with wishing he could muster more affection for his new mother-figure. There's also a question of whether or not Pastor Wyatt and Tracy are being ethical in wanting to adopt Cole so soon before the dust has really cleared from the epidemic. I felt like the book could've focused more and dealt with one or two of these topics more fully, as it felt kind of like two books in one. less

Meh. I was finding this really compelling until it crashed to a halt in the last couple of pages.

Very well written, but I think I have read too many end of the world/pandemic novels for a while.
