review 1: 3.5 stars. I liked the idea of the book, and the beginning really draws you into the story right away. It was very creepy and felt like the beginning of a kid's horror show like The Hub's "Haunting Hour." I just felt no character development. Aaron and Quinn were some of her friends, but we don't really get to know them. I wanted to really like Aaron 'cause he's her best friend, but there's nothing there to make us really care about him. I thought this book should be a stand-alone. It felt like the ending came out of nowhere, and I think that instead, it should've been a ''problem solved, case closed" kind of thing. I don't care to read any more from the sequel or series or whatever it is. There were some major creepy parts. I found it to be pretty gory at t... moreimes.
review 2: I'm scared of my own shadow. It took me a VERY long while to steel my nerves and crack this book open. When I first started it, I was dismayed. I didn't care for the characters at all, none of them. It felt like a regular YA book that I was sure I will have forgotten a week after I am to be finished with it. Surprisingly, that wasn't the case. It was like a different author took over after the first few chapters. He took me by the hand and SHOWED ME THINGS. Ha. Things I cared about, suddenly, everything in the story had depth and excitement and I was entranced. The book read like a movie, I could see everything so clearly, especially when they entered the fearscape. There were many creepy moments in the books, but what do you expect from a horror novel? But it wasn't so frightening that it put me off. Just gruesome bits. My cup of tea. I can't wait to see what fears Holt can cook up in the next books. less

It was kind of...lame. There are very few times I feel too old/mature to read a book aimed at children/teens, but this felt like one of those times. It was predictable, the action moves too fast, and the characters are flat. Every character, mind you. Absentee parents, with Dad in two modes when he appears; angry at his daughter (but he lets her get away with every arguement) or the try hard Dad trying to make life perfect without his wife. Goofy best friend (not a love interest) two stereotypical bullies, sexy jock taking a not-so-random interest in the heroine. Add to the mix oddly gorey horror scenes, and you have one of the worst books I've read this year (I have had some excellent books already this year, so an average one feels worse than it really was)Not my cup of tea, but younger readers might be thrilled by the gore. Two stars.

I'm not surprised one bit. This book easily delivers what I thought it would. Entertaining horror fluff to pass the time. I will say I didn't find this book to be very creepy. It felt more like Supernatural than something Clive Barker would come up with. Then again, I can't recall ever reading anything yet that has given me the heebie jeebies. If your looking for something light, quick, and could be an episode of Supernatural meets Wes Craven's They, I recommend you give this one a shot.
