review 1: An amazing story of the Atlantic Ocean, the geography around it, the technology developed to navigate it, the brave men and women who discovered it, and the role it plays in our daily lives. Every summer I spent a week or two on a beach house in Rye, New Hampshire overlooking the ocean and sometimes have the pleasure of sailing on the Atlantic. It's a source of endless fascination for me and my kids. I wish I had grown up by the sea and am blessed to have enjoyed this retreat now for over 30 years.New Hampshire is also the perfect place to enjoy the amazing storytelling of Simon Winchester. I'm certain to buy more of his many books.
review 2: Very readable history that starts way before man walked the earth; through the creation of the Atlantic Ocean; then to ... moreman's first ventures out on the seas, and why; to man utilizing, though never taming, the vast expanse; through eras with slaves, pirates and wars; until the more recent effects of mankind's impact on this precious resource. There is also some forward looking into a time when the continents continue their migration and the Atlantic Ocean rejoins earth's other bodies of water. Incredible to me was the author's personal knowledge through travel to so many ports and places.
