review 1: A commonplace killing is the first book I've read by Sian Busby. It was finished by her husband after her death and it shows. Maybe her other books are better. Set in London immediately after the end of WWII it is as grim as London must have been at that time. Well written but the ending seemed hurried and awkward…almost as if it were written by another author. One who wanted the money from another book.
review 2: Although there was not really much mystery surrounding the mystery in some ways it was refreshing to be expecting a twist, and in fact think you have the twist figured out, only for it actually to be exactly as you presumed the author was just wanting you to think…? Despite this I enjoyed the book, as it gave a great look into post war London,
... more it didn't all end on the day the war did - there was a country to rebuild, no food still, habits to lose, confusion on how to go about your day and an overall feeling of being fed up, and I had never really thought about this side of things. You just picture the joy at the war ending and everyone trying to move on as best they could - but the fact was the war lasted a lot longer than on paper. This kept me going through - as I really didn't like the main character DDI Cooper, he was just too mopey and self absorbed, and it didn't work for me, I understand there wasn't much to feel cheerful about, but this guy refused to see any light, he literally reminded me of Eeyore….. less
