review 1: A dual story of a lady who is haunted by a ghost and the story of how the ghost came to be. A very tense novel of two troubled women from two different eras. What kind of loss did the ghost suffer to cause her to appear and harass a young lady and her child and what must the woman do to protect her family? This is a story about coming to terms with loss and how we cope with it. A highly charged atmospheric novel that will draw you in and not let you go until you have finished. A must read for fans of historically based ghost stories.
review 2: I loved this book, a ghost story told from the alternating points of view of two women, in Texas in different eras, struggling to navigate their rocky transitions to marriage and/or motherhood. The descriptions of the gho
... morest were truly scary and so amazingly written - like no ghost I've ever read about before; original and startling. The theme of spoken storytelling threaded through both women's narratives was so moving and reminded me of one of my all-time favorite books, Possession. The plot was compelling and I couldn't stop turning pages until I got to the end. And in addition to all of that, the book has some interesting and thought-provoking points to make about the costs, psychic and parapsychic (is that a word?), of women sacrificing their work for their families. less
