review 1: These authors delve deep into the beauty/cosmetics industry. It turns out that this industry is very similar to the food industry: ruled by irresponsible rich businesspeople who really just want your money at the cost of your health. In both regards, the consumer may get instant results but will be ultimately worse off. The industry will trick you with fancy words and legitimate-sounding products but really you're covering yourself with chemicals and toxins that will inevitably hurt you. The best part of this book, however, isn't the scary stuff. Instead, they present great clean alternatives--some to buy and some to make--that replace the gross stuff easily. I would love if every woman read this. Be warned though: you will go on a violent purging of all of your make ... moreup and beauty products. It's worth it!
review 2: This book was really eye-opening, and I'm glad I read it. While at first it absolutely traumatized me and sent me into a tailspin of panic, I gave it some time to digest before reading the last two chapters, and I realized that it really makes a whole lot of sense. Loading our bodies up with products full of chemicals we can't pronounce can't be a good thing, and I intend to phase out my products that contain blacklist ingredients little by little. I enjoyed the last two chapters on diet and lifestyle, too.At times the language/tone/wording got on my nerves a bit, though. Phrases such as "you've probably heard of this unless you're living under a rock" and "isn't that cute?" following really disturbing discussions of negative results on innocent lab animals were overused and really rubbed me the wrong way, but I guess the point of the book is to shake us awake to the brutal realities of ever-present toxins and the non-existent regulation of the cosmetics industry (which still blows my mind, but having previously read "Skinny Bitch" it wasn't a total shock to me). This is definitely a must-read for anyone who uses products of any kind...which is everyone! less
