So, before we get into what I thought about this book, I want you to know that I was lucky enough to be given a digital version of this book for free from the publisher (St Martin’s Press) via Netgally.com in exchange for an honest review. The publication date was 1st August 2017.
Thanks for the advance copy.
…So what’s this book about?
Stone Cold Fox is an erotic paranormal romance novel (approx 240 pages) featuring shapeshifters, witches and humans and is set now in our modern human world.
This is the third novel in Ms Anderson’s paranormal romance series Cougarville; I haven’t read the first book Buck Naked but I have read book two Cougar Bait (read my review here) although I don’t think you need to have read either one to enjoy this story as Ms Anderson fills in any necessary gaps when necessary, however, as with most series, when you jump right in you sometimes miss the nuances of character relationships and past adventures.
If you’ve read any of my reviews before, you’ll know that I don’t reveal any plot twists or post spoilers of any kind in my book reviews, so here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story:
Cougarville’s mechanic, and resident Alpha fox, shelters a mysterious woman who ignites his protective animal instincts when evil forces try to tear them apart.
Jo Ferrell has been cast out of her home for reasons she doesn’t understand. The grey streak in her hair is gone, her body is younger, and there’s an ominous shadow chasing her. With nowhere else to go, Jo finds shelter in a shed whose owner she wants nothing to do with—but he’s too much to resist.
Reese Cooper has never felt a pull towards a woman like he does towards Jo and his Fox is desperate to claim her as their mate. After offering her a place to stay, Reese finds it difficult to resist his beautiful new roommate. But when dark magic threatens their happiness, Reese will use all of his strength to protect the woman he loves…if he’s not too late.
Stone Cold Fox is a fun, sexy, exciting read that will make readers want to revisit Cougarville again and again.
*Author’s Note: Though I have tried to handle the subject sensitively, certain events in this book may make anyone with a history of past abuse upset. Please read responsibly.*
…So, what did I like about it?
I am a fan of Ms Anderson’s writing style; I find her stories very easy to read, her plots intricate enough to keep me interested without losing me and the stories are told from our main characters’ point of view without being confusing as to who’s POV we were experiencing. Stone Cold Fox was no exception.
As with the previous book in this series, I loved our main characters. Jocasta Ferrell (Jo) has been through many tough experiences that would have broken many women but she survived. We met Reese Cooper (Coop) in the previous book; he is a wonderful kind hearted male who bends over backwards to help Jo feel safe and I’ve loved getting to know him better in this book.
I enjoyed their romantic (and sexual) journey; it had a nice pace. The plot had not completely unexpected twists & turns but it was still very much enjoyable. I loved the cameos from existing series characters and enjoyed meeting some new ones (hoping a certain dire wolf alpha gets his book next *hint*hint* Ms Anderson).
…So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?
What I find hard to come to terms with this whole series is the “need to breed” aspect that every female is forced to endure. My modern sensibilities & mindset stumble every time it’s mentioned.
…So, basically what I’m saying is…
I really did enjoy this book; it was good. It ticked lots of my boxes; our heroine was an independent and intelligent woman, our hero was an alpha male with a big heart and the plot itself had a mystery/thriller element as well as action in the form of great fight scenes, passionate sex scenes and, of course, oodles of romance.
I’d recommend the book to older readers (if it was a film it would be rated 15 or 18 due to the sex and violence) who are fans of darker paranormal romances of a more erotic nature where the romantic couple’s journey to a happy ever after ending is fraught with obstacles, danger and personal growth.
