Guards of Folsom
review 1: My Review:I'll admit it, I'm an angst ho and this book definitely fed that need. Although this book is part of the Guards of Folsom series, it had a very different feel in that the majority of the book took place in Florida, away from the BDSM scenes. In fact, there was very little of this book that was about the sex at all. This was most definitely an emotion-based book...remember that angst I mentioned? This book features a menage relationship, but it's not one that sets up like normal. Bobby and Rig are both big, bad, older Doms. They were in a triad relationship until 7 years ago when their sub died. In a twist of fate that can only happen in fiction, they meet Mason just as he's hit rock bottom. Both his Doms were killed in a car accident 4 weeks before this book takes... more place. They literally save him from himself. This book is about the three of them finding their way past the grieving of their mutual losses within each other. It was an interesting dichotomy just because it was so unusual. Rig and Bobby...I pictured them completely like middle aged bears. They still like their sex hot and heavy, but are mature enough to realize when someone needs so much more than that like Mason does...he's floundering and they want to protect and help him. I kept picturing them like big teddy bears...all rough and gruff on the outside but truly cuddle bunnies and squishy on the inside. Because they have been with each other a long time, they have an easy relationship between the two of them. They know how to read each other and I really liked that aspect of their relationship. While they may not always agree on their approach to things, they had a level of trust and ease between them that make it work. Then there's Mason. gah...my heart broke for him and his circumstance. He's so alone. To go from having two other people who make up his world to none in a split second would be nothing short of devastating. I truly could see and understand the depths of his loss and his inability to face life without his guys. Add to that his social anxieties and I wanted Rig and Bobby to bundle him up and care for him as much as they wanted to do so. Like I said this was truly a book about the emotional recovery, but there were a few hot and heavy scenes too. Just don't go into the book expecting that in the way that there is in the others from this series. There's a journey the characters have to go through first before they get there.
review 2: An amazing story that dares to deal with the topic of suicide, a brave move on the part of the author as the issue is personal to her family. Be sure to read the author note before starting the book. If you're like me, you may shed a few tears right there.Just as I could feel the author's pain about her loss, I could also feel deeply the pain Mason felt after losing his two Doms. So beautifully written that even though I bled for Mason, I could not turn away from his pain. I so desperately wanted him to find someone to love him again.I fell in love with both Rig and Bobby who also had to deal with the death of a loved one. Everything they did for Mason made me so proud of them and happy that Mason had found someone to care about him so deeply. This story is both raw and tender. Did I mention beautifully written? Highly recommend! less
