review 1: I admit, I thought I wouldn't like this book...I think I might have tried to not like it ...all because of my bias against novels in verse. But this book is pretty amazing and I can't imagine it being told any other way. The way the author creates her poems-the format of them-sometimes it made me giddy to see it on the page. Just perfect. Also... this story is such a downer. Especially reading it and thinking about everything else violent going on the world today (ie. Feguson, Eric Garner, etc.) it was sort of depressing. But I couldn't stop reading it, I was invested. And there is payoff-there is hope and recovery and life. I might have a little trouble recommending it to kids, it's for a special reader at a special time (and that time might be they need to read a verse n... moreovel for school), but I think many adults would like this very much and see the beauty I found in it as well.
review 2: Just love this cover art, it drew the eyes of many of my students as well. Unfortunately, this book is best suited for older MG readers due to the guerrilla war violence. Some of the sections/poems are quite whimsical and fun and relevant as the narrator is a young boy concerned about everyday things like soccer, family and friends. But then the soldiers and rebels enter his village and he is forced to grow up and abandon his childhood and innocence and fight for survival, and the writing takes a serious, dark tone. Liked how the ending brings closure. less

Great for a novel in verse- easier to follow than most.
