Every year, around the end of September, I always see a large pack of café racers tearing up the streets of San Francisco wearing suits and ties. Apparently I’ve been living under a rock, because this is a world wide event brought together to support the Movember foundation, called the “Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride“.
Sponsored by Zenith and Triumph, this vintage and classic motorcycle ride unites for men’s health and prostate cancer awareness on the same day, worldwide.
This year, there was a ride taking place in both San Francisco and San Jose, so me and Sonia decided to make the trek up to the city to partake, even on our Harley’s (Yes, this is a niche event that advertises as “café racers” or “vintage” bikes ONLY, but honestly nobody is going to turn you away if you show up with the right attitude).
We rode up from South San Jose to Chrissy Field where we were bombarded with so many dapper folk! The event took off just after 11am, where we rode up the streets of San Francisco, stopping traffic and turning heads, towards our first stop – Civic Center Plaza. Soon thereafter we headed towards Golden Gate Park on our way up to the Golden Gate Bridge, but at this point I was sweating a storm under my clothes and my bike was burning up, so me and Sonia decided we had participated long enough and headed towards Haight St for some much needed dranks.
This year alone, the ride raised over 4 million dollars worldwide.
