review 1: Really don't know how I feel about this. It held me captivated the entire way through, but for mixed reasons. At the start, it had the makings of a good psychological thriller. About halfway through, it slipped out of reality and had me wondering what exactly it was getting at. Very intriguing ideas, and I loved the character explorations even if the situation was somewhat hard to grasp. Reading some of the other reviews on here it seems this is actually more of a sequel, so I'd probably recommend reading the other book first, as that may lend some more comprehension to the reader. 4 stars for the writing itself, 2 stars for the weirdness factor, thus the three.
review 2: 3 and 1\2 stars: I absolutely loved "The Mall" so I had very high hopes for the follow up ... morefrom South African duo, SL Grey. I was only mildly disappointed. "The Ward" throws you straight back into the weird world we encountered in the last book. I love the two person writing style adopted by the writers and their characterisation is near perfect, toppling my long held idea that you need to like at least one character to get on board with a story. SL Grey's characters are deliciously imperfect but engaging enough to keep the pages turning. I also love the way the writers again, managed to ease so many social and political issues into their story, making it far more than your bog standard horror story. " The Ward" just isn't as tight or as powerful as the last offering, hence just three and a half stars. I wait with baited breath to see where SL Grey will takes next though. less
