review 1: What a well-written short story. Clearly the author is bright and well-read -- her word choice and flow are a pleasure to read. I only found a handful of misspellings / grammatical errors and I certainly appreciated that (they always jump out at me and momentarily take me out of the story -- I don't want to leave!).The characters, Lydia, Chase, and their sundry friends from uni have gathered to say goodbye to Lydia who is moving from San Francisco to NY for her job. This is what she wants and it partly speaks to her immaturity (she's around 23) to not understand how important those friendships, esp. Chase's, are to her.Because it's a short story we are expected to fill in a lot of the blanks, but the author has made it really easy to do so -- she's given us just enough of ... morethe characters' personalities that we can figure it out. While some of the lack of communication between Lydia and Chase in particular but also between her and her "besties" (how she herself describes them) after she moves to NY seems preposterous, esp her missing her dearest's wedding, it does help the plot move along. If it were a longer book that would be a nit of mine, but in a short story yeah, okay. I can go with it. I just want to get back to Lydia and Chase figuring things out! What really resonated with me was that Lydia doesn't want to appear vulnerable. She is afraid to be honest with her friends, with Chase and really with herself. She covers it up with stand-offishness or ignoring the person, and that (unfortunately) really struck a chord with me. I've always admired people more like Chase, who are real, who put it out there even if it leaves them feeling exposed.Lydia grows, she discovers that she'll never really be happy unless she is honest with herself and those closest to her, and that I liked. It's simply a well-written short story with some good sex which made sense. I look forward to reading more from this author!
review 2: “My work was more important than love, and now I'm paying the price for it.”For six years Lydia and Chase have been best friends. On the night before Lydia moves across the country to NYC their relationship shifts. This is a romance story many of us have dreamed, boy and girl don’t realize they love each other until it is too late; however where other authors would write one chapter dealing with the fateful night, SL Scott weaves the details from that night throughout Lydia’s journey of discovery and the years she bears the responsibility of changing the rules on one of the most important people in her life. "Sounds exciting. All your dreams have come true, Lydia. You must be happy." I look back up, directly into his eyes. "Dreams, happiness… hmmm, maybe. I don't really know anymore."This short story wastes no time getting to the deep emotions of Lydia and Chase’s relationship. Lydia is too focused on her career to allow anyone into her heart, and Chase loves her too much not to give Lydia what she needs, the strong support of a friend. S.L. Scott writes words so perfect that no matter the length; short-story or full length book, I feel an intense connection with her characters. Every character plays a meaningful role; there was a time I wanted to high-five one of their friends through my e-reader for saying what I so wanted to tell Lydia. This is a fantastic short read, pick it up - you will read it again and again. When I learned about Sleep with Mr. Sexy’s impending release on Amazon I contacted SL to ask when it would be available for my Nook, she offered me a copy for the purpose of my honest review. I loved it! less
