review 1: I wanted to like this book because it's so beautifully, lyrically written. Unfortunately, I had to give up at the halfway point because it was all just too much. I kept waiting for things to happen and nothing ever seemed to. At some level, I think I found the beautiful descriptions just served to distance me from the characters and the flow of the story in a way I just couldn't deal with. I suspect there are many people who would enjoy this book much more than I did.
review 2: An ambitious fantasy novel. Sometimes hard to follow as so many aspects of fictional cultures are introduced that it's difficult to keep it all straight - especially when many elements are never revisited, reinvested... Super poetic language, a bit much sometimes, but near the end ther... moree's one gorgeous section where the main character falls in love with a ghost and spends a few months on the edge of desert communing with her spirit. less
