review 1: I liked this story and read through it quite quickly. Sophie is a new mom caught up in the ideals of what she thinks she should do as a parent in order to give her kids the kind of privilege and security she longed for as a child. Her husband, a museum curator, frequently gives in to the material wants and desires of his wife under her assurances that they "can manage" thus letting Sophie secretly put their home and financial security at risk. Sophie gets caught up in stealing from the museum her husbands works at in order to maintain their lifestyle and right as she comes to her senses and tries to get out of the scam, she is blackmailed into staying. I read this book very quickly because of the anxiety I felt for Sophie and the imminent train wreck that was about to happ... moreen. I was satisfied with the ending because the author follows the story past the hijinx of the thievery.
review 2: I wanted to like this book, because so many aspects of the story seemed to come out of my own life: the struggle to be a good parent, to lay down roots, to find clothes that fit, all while resenting those who seemingly have it all. But while it's interesting to see the protagonist's increasing desperation and the unraveling of her dreams, the setup took way too long and the resolution was too pat. There was no real payoff at the end because the main character never has to face any real or dire consequences. less
