review 1: I have to say. That ending…WHY!! How can they have her father betray her!!! No! And JENNA!! I liked her. She was nice to Ariane. And how can Dr. Jacobs want Ariane to kill Rachel?! His own granddaughter!! That's cruel. And Rachel told Zane about how her grandfather was the only one that didn't ignore her all the time. But, he was always working. But then the evil man tried to throw away the only thing that he loved. Rachel. But it did work. But Zane's mother wanted Zane to come with her! Wow. This is the best/worst ending ever. Wow.
review 2: I wasn't really sold on this book; I was at the library and just needed one more to bring on a long car ride. Honestly it was the name 'Zane' that caught my eye (because I love Zane from the "Uglies" series) and prompted
... more me to pick this one. I'd only skimmed over the synopsis before saying why not and grabbing it from the shelf. After finishing it I can say I'm not crazy about it, but it wasn't necessarily bad. The story was written from alternating perspectives which I'm not normally a huge fan of, but it worked okay in this circumstance. An odd thing about the writing was that it read as though it was a letter or a speech. The characters talked in the first person as if talking to someone (indirectly). The history and flashbacks weren't encased in the character's head/thoughts, they were blatantly said as if explaining to an audience. I think this style the author chose to use created many long paragraphs of the narrator talking on and on; there was too much telling and not enough showing. I really believe this degraded the plot, as much of what made up the book was descriptions of the past simply said, not actually occurring. The content, the ideas inside of the book's formatting, were interesting enough, though, outside of the snippets we hear about Ariane's time with GTX, the majority of anything the reader really remembers is the romance between Ariane and Zane. It was the most classic play of loving someone you can't have. The unfortunate thing is how weak their relationship was. Not weak as in they didn't care for each other, but weak as in the crafting of it. The whole book, besides for the underlying premise (a half extraterrestrial, half human girl), seemed pretty much unplanned/thrown together. It's like the author had a good base idea for the story but didn't spend time developing the actual storyline. The events and the characters were missing a crucial creative spark that normally makes it all come alive for me (a total bummer for any book, to be unattached to the characters). Even with this sour-toned review, it wasn't a terrible read. Not one of my favorites or one that takes me to another world, but an average read nonetheless. less
