review 1: I have no idea how I came upon this book, whether I read about it or whether somebody recommended it. What matters is that I learned about it and read it, all in one day. And then I read it a second time. I love how Fish makes us look at what a good sentence is; how he examines good first sentences in fiction and nonfiction; how he examines good last sentences in the same. Most of all, I love the heart of this book: chapters five and six, which deal with the Subordinating Style and the Additive Style. Until I read these chapters, I thought (if I were conscious of it at all) that people deliberately chose to write with certain kinds of sentences. That is, I thought a writer's world attitude and sentence structure weren't related. But after reading Fish's analysis, I now beli... moreeve that our choice of sentence structure is intuitive and reflects how we think, feel, and experience the world. Knowing this helps me recognize and appreciate both styles when I encounter them.
review 2: For me, fellow goodreaders, though I cannot claim that I am expert in the skills that great writers possess, or talented as those who readers of great works of literature have admired throughout the ages, yet real greatness I believe can be found in the simple and passionate love of words, and that anyone who is truly committed to the worthy goal of understanding good writing and the honest pursuit of creating great sentences, when he would write, his words (in my opinion), like so many deft and artistic writers before, follow after his pen at his call, and as faithful disciples, whenever he will, file easily onto his ready page. Stanley Fish helps you write sentences like that one (modeled after a sentence by John Milton's "An Apology Against a Pamphlet"). Buy this book and write better sentences. less
