review 1: As with many art history books, I read that pages that captured my interest, and this book has many treasures in its pages including paintings from the usual suspects, and photographs ranging from lesser known people to Marilyn Monroe reading James Joyce "Ulysses." Karen Joy Fowler's foreward is interesting, and Stefan Bollman's narratives are informative and free of jargon. I think this is the type of book many folks would know if they interested in, though I don't know that it would capture those who aren't interested, because it is pretty much what one would expect.

... moreull-page painting reproduction. We're told about women's reading habits, about the movement (for all readers) from reading aloud being the norm, to it being the rarity, and we're told a little about art. If I had spare $$ at the moment I'd be going online to try and find a copy to buy. less
