review 1: Solid 3.5 on this one. Definitely a good first effort in mystery with a decently told and paced story. I must disagree strongly with the comparison to Caleb Carr. Carr does a much, much better job of setting his story in the early 19th century New York. Most of the time, the book could have been anywhere, anytime except for the police methodology. The characters were fairly well drawn, but not as deep and complete as I would like. The clues to the criminal are fairly clear throughout, but I still enjoyed the discovery and chain of reason to get there. I see a bright future for Pintoff and in fact checked out the next book the the Simon Ziele storyline today. I would characterize this as solid mystery but not nearly of Caleb Carr's quality and depth of chara... morecter.
review 2: Not bad, but not fabulous. I picked this up at the thrift store, intrigued by the summary of a murder mystery outside NYC at the turn of the 20th century. The mystery was interesting, though I figured out the broad strokes well before they were revealed (lesser elements were unexpected.) Though Pintoff throws in some historical color (women involved with suffrage, Tamany Hall corruption, etc.) I didn't feel immersed in the time like I had hoped. And the characters were varied with interesting back stories, but somehow lacked real depth. less
