review 1: The second of Pintoff's novels about Simon Ziele who solves crimes at the beginning of the 20th century. I really love the characters in this book and how they cope with trying to solve odd series of crimes in NY. The new crimes cause author to bring in new characters - like the handwriting expert and how the universities supported early crime solving techniques and seemingly encouraged their professors to conduct additional research. Pretty cool. I love reading about New York circa 1906, excellent job at capturing time and place.
review 2: Great book for those who enjoyed The Alieniest. Pintoff's knowledge of NYC, and police procedure and criminal law, in the early 1900s is amazing. For some reason I have a hard time picture Simon Ziele as a man -- I keep ha... moreving to remind myself the protagonist is a man. Very entertaining book -- just like with Barbara Kingsolver, I feel as though I am learning more about history with each chapter. less
