review 1: Follow Your HeartThis is a calm, easy going story about people daring to go after what they want. I say "calm" because it is a gentle and sometimes slow story. Sprinkled throughout are touches of Stella Gibbons' great humor. I didn't want to miss those - but at times the action was so slow I was tempted to skim.We are presented with various groups of people: 1) The ones who always do what they should, follow standard, act appropriately. 2) People who dare to finally cross the lines of society and challenge norms, people who do what they want regardless of the consequences. 3) the peripheral characters who are caught in the crossfireThis is an easy going story with touches of Gibbons' dry wit. If you'd like to read a title with that humor in the forefront, read Cold Comfort... more Farm. Both books are good, it just depends what you're looking for.
review 2: stella Gibbons is best known for her brilliant comic novel Cold Comfort Farm. however, her other novels are not comedies, but rather gentle stories of families, romances etc. This is a pleasant enough story, about a young widow, Viola, who goes to live with her stuffy in-laws after the death of her husband. the chief interest of her father in law, Mr Withers, is money, and the chief interest of his wife is keeping her husband happy. Their older daughter, Madge, spends her time playing golf and tennis, and yearning for a dog, she also harbours a suppressed love for a man who has married and gone to India. their younger daughter, Tina, is in love with the handsome young chauffeur, Saxon. viola falls for handsome, dashing, Victor Spring, heartthrob of the neighbourhood, Viola and Tina's romantic adventures form the central theme of the novel.anyone expecting another hilarious comedy like Cold Comfort Farm will be disappointed but if you can forget about Gibbons's earlier brilliance, this is an enjoyable, quiet story with touches of mild humour. less
