review 1: This was enjoyable, but did not have the memorable characters of Cold Comfort Farm.Viola is a former shopgirl widow. Her husband's well off family takes her in when her husband dies, but have little interest in her life or feelings. She falls in love with a neighbor, even though he is engaged to another. There is a sub plot about a budding romance between her sister in law and the chauffeur (shades of Downton Abbey indeed). And yes it has a happy ending. What struck me as I read it, especially the final chapter, was the fact that it was written in 1938. Stella Gibbons wraps everything up neatly, and tells you how the main characters lives go on. But we all know that just 2 years later, Britain goes to war, and the quiet countryside of Britain will change dramatic... moreally.
review 2: Stella Gibbons at her best! Although this story begins with the arrival of the recently widowed Viola to her in-laws manor The Eagles, it is merely the beginning. Viola, a very young widow of 21, is placed in the unusual situations of living with her in-laws Mr. and Mrs. Wirther, and their two aging daughters Madge and Tina who botha are over 30, who remain unmarried. This book is not merely about the going-ons with the family there, but the the Springs who live a short distance away, the chauffeur and his mother, and a hermit who repeatedly brings the book to unexpected climaxes. Gibbons makes sure you remain interested by interweaving the lives of all these characters together, and brings perhaps expected and unexpected endings to their lives. Proving in different ways, one can find happiness in different manners; even if they were not what was intended in the first place. Although I originally picked this up as a library book; I will be purchasing this one, and have full intentions of re-reading it again and again in years to come. Highly recommended! less

I tried. I really did. But I'm 100 pages in and absolutely nothing has happened. Sorry, book club.

Un livre charmant sans tomber dans la mièvrerie, drôle et féroce.
